How do you know if a power tool battery needs replacing?

Cordless power tool batteries don’t last forever. Because of the chemistry going on inside the tool’s battery cells, it is inevitable that degradation of performance and capacity will occur over time.

But, how do you know when it’s time to replace your cordless tool’s battery?

Firstly, has your battery stopped holding its charge and you find yourself continually having to recharge it? This would be a prime indicator that the tool battery is dying on you.

There is, however, a sure-fire way to test if your cordless drill battery or other power tool battery needs replacing - that’s by using a battery tester (often a multimeter).

Battery testers and multimeters, when connected to your power tool battery pack, will tell you the performance of the battery and give you a definitive answer.

subtel® sells a wide range of universal, replacement battery packs - for even older power tool models. Browse our webshop to find a 100% compatible, long-lasting and high-capacity replacement or spare battery for your tools.

How to choose the best replacement battery for your cordless power tools?

Having a good, quality replacement battery for your power tools is the difference between them working on full-power, with optimal performance and a battery life that surpasses the original battery that came with the tool and, well, the tool working poorly or not at all.

So how do you know what’s the best replacement battery for your power tools?

Most importantly, you need to find a replacement battery pack that’s compatible with your tool.

There are different types of powertool battery packs available - from lithium-ion batteries (Li-ion batteries for short), nickel-cadmium batteries (Ni-Cd batteries) and nickel-metal hydride batteries (NiMH batteries) - that all use a different range of voltages and connector sockets.

Find out the model number of the battery you’re looking to replace and make sure any replacement battery you purchase is 100% compatible with this model.

There are many universal replacement battery brands out there who produce compatible battery replacements for a huge number of power tool models, even very old models - and buying a universal replacement, spare or back-up battery can save you a lot of money over buying a branded replacement.

But, when buying a universal cordless battery pack, what should you look for?

Choose something that’s high-quality and reliable, from a brand you can trust.

Cheap replacement batteries may a) not work, b) not correctly fit your device, c) offer a lower battery capacity than advertised or d) not comply with international safety standards.

High-quality replacements using safe, modern battery cell technology, on the other hand, can actually improve the performance of your cordless power tools compared to the original battery that came with them.

This is because modern battery packs can offer a much larger capacity (mAh) than older ones, giving you a greatly extended battery life and reducing the frequency with which you need to recharge the batteries.

At subtel.co.uk, you will find a wide range of affordable tool batteries with modern, high-capacity and temperature-resistant cells from our in-house manufacturer, CELLONIC® - for long-lasting, reliable power and unrivalled safety and quality.

Power tool batteries: What do capacity, Ah or mAh mean?

We’ve all heard phrases like ‘long-life battery’ and ‘high-capacity battery’, but what defines how long the life of a power tool battery is? This is exactly where capacity, Ah and mAh come in.

The capacity of a battery is the amount of charge it’s able to store. The higher the capacity, the longer a power tool such as an electric drill or chainsaw can run in between charges.

A battery's capacity is usually expressed in amperage hours (Ah) or milliampere hours (mAh). This figure indicates how much charge a battery can store and make available whilst in use.

The higher the Ah or mAh number, the higher the capacity and the longer the battery life of the battery.

So, when buying a new battery for your power tool, capacity is an important characteristic to consider - especially if you want to use the tool for extended periods of time without recharging or using backup batteries.

How long should a cordless tool battery pack last?

Cordless power tool batteries come with many different cell types and technologies and these can have a large impact on the overall lifespan of a battery.

Here is a short breakdown of some of the battery technologies and how many charging cycles can be expected from them:

Lithium batteries and power packs: modern lithium battery packs from subtel® and CELLONIC® achieve approximately 700-1000 charging cycles before they fall below 80% residual charge - with one charge cycle equating to a complete charge from 0% to 100%.

NiCD and NiMH battery packs: modern NiMH battery packs from subtel® and CELLONIC® achieve approximately 350-500 charging cycles before they fall below 80% residual charge.

Whilst these are the results we’ve seen in testing, it is also important to adopt a sensible charging and battery care routine to prolong the lifespan of your batteries as best you can.

Can you extend the battery life of a power tool battery?

By taking proper care of your batteries for tools, you can increase their lifespan and prolong their performance. A lot of this comes down to how and when you’re recharging your power tool batteries.

Care tips for cordless tool batteries often depend on the battery cell technology that’s being used - but, in general, using chargers that over charge or use excessive charging speeds will quickly degrade the performance of your tool’s batteries.

Slow and steady wins the race - and intelligent, smart chargers and ‘gentle’ chargers are the key to not putting too much strain on your power tool’s battery.

Tips for extending the lifespan of lithium-ion batteries and lithium-polymer batteries

If you want to extend the battery life of lithium-ion batteries - charge your batteries gently, avoiding too low and high charge levels.

What this means is, aim to never let your device’s battery level drop down beyond a minimum of 20% charge and beyond a maximum of 80% charge. This means it’s not recommended to leave your batteries charging overnight, because they will exceed 80%.

Following this simple rule will increase the lifespan of your lithium batteries by maintaining their correct capacity over the long-term.

Tips for extending the lifespan of Ni-Cd and NiMH battery packs

For NiMH batteries and NiCd batteries, this logic is reversed. Instead, it’s best to fully charge and fully discharge these battery types - from 100% to 0% - as partial charges will lower the battery life.

This is because of something called ‘Memory Effect’ - where each time you charge, the capacity of the battery slightly decreases. It doesn’t matter if you charge for two minutes or two hours, the battery will still incur an incremental loss of battery capacity.

The modern battery cells used in CELLONIC® NiMH batteries offer a much lower level of Memory Effect, helping them to last longer and with an increased number of charging cycles.

How to correctly store your spare and reserve batteries

The temperature at which you store your powertool batteries can have a large impact on their longevity, performance and ability to hold charge.

The golden rule is: avoid storing them in hot temperatures and avoid storing them in cold temperatures.

The optimal temperature to store rechargeable batteries is at a cool 15-20°C. This means you should avoid the following:

  • Do not leave your rechargeable batteries in a hot car or workshop during summer
  • Do not leave them by a window or in direct sunshine
  • Do not wrap them in cloth or any other material which will increase their overall temperature
  • Do not leave them in a cold shed or garage over the winter

Whilst we can’t always 100% ensure our batteries are stored at the perfect temperature, the modern cells manufactured by subtel® and CELLONIC® have been specifically designed to be extra temperature resistant - for reliable, longer life and higher capacity whatever the weather.

Self-discharge and deep discharge - what are they?

The level of charge held in rechargeable batteries will decrease over time - even when in storage and not being used. This is called self-discharge.

Depending on the battery cell type, the level a rechargeable battery will self-discharge ranges from about 4%-30% a month.

If stored unused for an extended period of time, and the charge / voltage stored within the cells falls too far, this is called deep discharge.

Deep discharge can greatly diminish a battery’s ability to recharge - and may even render the battery useless.

While self-discharge is normal and unavoidable, deep discharge is avoidable.

Firstly, storing your batteries at lower temperatures reduces the rate of self-discharge and helps preserve the energy stored in the battery.

But to ensure the longevity of your backup batteries, it’s essential that you use them every few months to keep them functioning. This could mean charging/discharging them through regular use or scheduling top-up charges at intervals throughout the year.
